Research activity

Past activities of the Head of the Laboratory have mainly addressed research issues in the fields of human motor neuroscience. His research strategy has been to study in parallel both healthy and diseased motor systems allowing cross-fertilization between the two areas. The inventions of novel experimental protocols have allowed to identify basic neural mechanisms in healthy subjects. These methods are now being applied to patients with movement disorders to demonstrate pathophysiological mechanisms. Information has flowed in the opposite direction by studying patients with well-defined central nervous system lesions to test hypotheses regarding the healthy motor system.

Comparative strenghts of the research unit in a 3-5 year time frame


The unit is pursuing translational research in medicine by merging basic knowledge of fundamental physiology of nervous system with expertise in pathophysiology of movement disorders, in addition to engineering proficiency at the interface of the human body with the environment. For instance, vibratory stimulation of muscle in intact man has been exploited to show dramatic dependence on proprioception of body orientation in space during functional tasks like locomotion. Use of the same tool in spasmodic torticollis patients has shown refractoriness to proprioceptive input, while in Parkinsonian patients it helps normalizing gait pattern. Whole-body control is being studied while standing on a continuously oscillating platform. This protocol has been exploited for highlighting the different ‘strategies’ employed by the subjects, depending on the availability of vision and frequency of oscillation. This tool has proven to be appropriate also in rehabilitation of patients affected by diverse disorders of equilibrium and by Parkinson’s disease.
